The Ballad of the William and Emma

On October 27th 1916 the British town of Salcombe suffered a terrible loss when the town's lifeboat ( coast guard ) capsized whilst on a rescue mission and 13 of the 15 man crew were drowned . To pay a centenary tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the crew , a group of friends and musicians came together in Los Angeles in October 2016 to perform a musical ballad . All of the material was composed by this group and can be viewed on YouTube - see link below to ''The Ballad of the William and Emma ''
Here are the lyrics to the songs .

Farewell to Salcombe

And so at last the day has come

And I must be on my way

I hope to be returning

But when I couldn’t say

I’m off to join the war in France

With all the lads I’ll take my chance

So pray for me,

Here in Salcombe, by the sea

In the boatyards and the village farms

We’re brothers fighting arm in arm

In a foreign field

With our flag unfurled

We’ll risk our lives for a better world

And when the times are bleak and hard

I’ll hold you closely to my heart

And I’ll always be

Here in Salcombe, by the sea

One more time down Island Street

To say farewell to the folks I meet

The harbor view from off the Fore

There’s no other place like this I’m sure

And when I’m feeling down and blue

I’ll close my eyes and think of you

My heart will always be

Here in Salcombe, by the sea

Yes I’ll always be

Here in Salcombe, by the sea

We row the boat through life together

Look alive there boys

And be sure to trim those sails

Stow the ballast tight

All hands to the gunwhales

There’s a southerly blowing hard , 4 or 5

Lets get awash

And be sure to catch the tide

  • Bridge

Lets head out to the point

And out to sea

Leave the world behind

Where we can feel free

Out on the sea , out on the sea

We can be free

  • Chorus

We row this boat through life together

We row this boat through life together

Through the peacetime and the wars

The sunshine and the storms

We row this boat through life together

With arms of iron

And hands as tough as leather

We can sail this boat

Through any kind of weather

The skies are clear

The sea is sparkling blue

Lets ride the bar

And see what she can do

Repeat Bridge and Chorus

The Sea

My darling can you hear me?

I fear I can’t hold on

To live the life we’ve made

To see my new born son

I’m drifting all alone

I see the angels high above

My soul is going home

Remember me my love

Let me drown

Beneath this raging sea

Let go my hands

And cast me free

I am no more the land

This is my destiny

I am forever more

The Sea

This life’s been one

Too beautiful to measure

With gifts beyond my dreams

And moments to be treasured

So hold me one more time

As I know I’m failing fast

Press me close against your heart

For this day will be my last

I see the sky turn red

And the seas turn black

And with one last breath

There’s no turning back

I saw the stars dissolve

The moon eclipse the sun

In the boat that speeds me

To Elysium

Let me drown

Beneath this raging sea

Let go my hands

And cast me free

I am no more the land

This is my destiny

I am forever more

The Sea, the Sea, the Sea

Angel On My Shoulder

You can’t feel the pain

That finds me each day

That covers the light

That showed me the way

I feel you near me

But its just not the same

And I know you hear me

When I call out your name

So help me find a better way

See me through another day

Let me feel you by my side

Take away my pain inside

In my heart I know you’re here

To hold my hand and soothe my fears

And every day as I get older

You’ll be the Angel On My Shoulder

I feel like I’m floating

On a sea of emotion

Now you have left me

I’m adrift on the ocean

I feel you near me

But its just not the same

And I know you hear me

When I call out your name

So help me find a better way

See me through another day

Let me feel you by my side

Take away my pain inside

In my heart I know you’re here

To hold my hand and soothe my fears

And every day as I get older

You’ll be the Angel On My Shoulder

Crossing the Bar  ( Inspired by Lord Tennyson )

Sunset and the evening star

There’ll be no moaning of the bar

‘We’re on our way back home ‘

And one clear call you’ll hear from me

When I put my soul out to sea

‘We’re on our way back home ‘

Chorus

We are all born of time and place

And we must meet our pilot face to face

The tides of life may push us far

So hold me tight

And together we will cross the bar

Twilight and the evening bell

There’ll be no sadness of farewell

We’re on our way back home

The moon is rising the earth’s asleep

The lads are smiling across the boundless deep

They’re on their way back home

We are all born of time and place

And we must meet our pilot face to face

The tides of life may push us far

So hold me tight

And together we will cross the bar

We're on our way , we're on our way back home .....
